ECA Presents Subject Spotlight: Fauna Investigations in EIA: are we asking the right question?

Mike has been an independent fauna consultant for over 40 years, and in that time has carried out hundreds of projects to inform EIA, including many fauna surveys. The approach to such surveys is often guided by state and federal guidance. Mike has regularly questioned and challenged such guidance, as such surveys often consider only a small proportion of the fauna assemblage (<5%), are expensive, time-consuming and do not appear to address the primary purpose of EIA (broadly speaking to protect biodiversity).

It is therefore proposed that investigations should be framed around developing an understanding of how a proposed development will interact with the fauna assemblage and the environment that supports that assemblage. This is as more about ecosystem function and threatening processes than species lists.
